Can I Eat Hogweed?

You may have come across this off-white ubel type flowering plant growing at the edge recently, discovered its name and then thought ... 'is hogweed edible?'.  Maybe you asked your walking companion... "can I eat hogweed?".
The answer is both yes and no.  Hogweed is not edible if you are someone who suffers from celery or grapefruit allergey.
Watch my video 'Can I eat Hogweed' to see how it is different from both Giant Hogweed, and it's poisonous lookalike Hemlock.
I love plants that have weird survival techniques and Common Hogweed (Herecleum Sphondyleum ) has my admiration for many reasons... watch to find out how amazing this plant is.
The parts I prefer are the stuffed leaf buds - before they unfold from their pouches the leaves of hogweed are all curled up tightly in little pouches a couple of inches long. These leaf buds are like little parcels of fragrant brocolli and are delicious steam fried, then crisped off.
For some fascinating seed facts... there is more in the video below.  Watch it and learn...
  • Nominal Facts (What is in a name?)
  • Which parts of Hogweed to Eat?
  • When and where it grows?
  • How to identify it?
  • How not to get it mixed up with Hemlock.
  • Cautions and allergens
